I thought I didn't get the series because I was too young to get the ending.
Just rewatched again as a young adult. Nope. Still don't freaking get it.

Long story short (but I'm going to keep it long anyway), it's all about Shinji finding meaning and realising his worth lies with himself, not the perceptions of the people around him and that he is the one who decides his happiness. It's one long dialogue between him and the supporting character's consciousness' explaining how the real world is a cold, hard, unforgiving place - a world ruled by dogs - but that isn't anything to stop you from going out into it and making connections with real people, changing it for the better. How you perceive things is the key ingredient, like they said. Rainy days don't have to be sad, sunny days don't have to be happy. So why change yourself to fit how someone else perceives you, all for their approval? You won't get anywhere with that, being something you're not, losing everyone until you're left with the person you want to be with the least: yourself. Accepting yourself for who you are is the first step to finding your place in the world, and having the strength to not hate yourself demonstrates the first sign of your self worth. Considering Shinji struggled with this shit all throughout the show, it serves as a culmination of all he's experienced and been exposed to, the flashpoint to self-actualisation.

You won't get it if you're not depressed, but then again, Eva is a depressing show made by depressed people for depressed people. I watch this when I'm depressed and it helps me, genuinely, since I come out of it better than I went in. At the end of it, I realise my life could have greater value, that I'm no more or no less of myself. I want to be myself, to continue existing in this world, because my life is worth living. And that is the message this ending tried to teach.

And yes, EoE is a happy ending.

Thank for the explanation

It wasn't slice of life, it was introspective. Sure, it wasn't action packed, but it was far from laid-back. If you want something more intense, I recommend watching the End of Evangelion. You can find a dubbed version on Internet Archive.

LameLoura • 2 years ago

Hey, thank you so much for the answer.

I've been told i have to check out the director's cut for episode 21-24 ( aka 21'-24') before proceeding to the End of Evangelion. Are they available on this website? Do you have any suggest as to where I can watch these directory cut?

Wasn't aware there was a director's cut, and honestly I'd say just go ahead and watch EoE right away. You won't find a dubbed version of EoE on here, but Internet Archive has it in a downloadable format, might have the director's cuts too, but idk.

And be warned, it's a bit of a mindfuck.

LameLoura • 2 years ago

Mindfuck is the exact reason I started watching this series. Thank you again for the input!

My pleasure.

what the hell is going on.

Just want it to be clear to anyone that is confused these ARE the Netflix dubs AND episodes 21 through 24 on here ARE the director cuts. After this you're gonna watch "End of Evangelion". You can skip "Death And Rebirth", it was basically promotional material for End of Evangelion in Japan. It's a bit more nuanced than that and you can watch it if you're a completionist but imo you can skip it and just go to End of Evangelion. After all that you can watch the Rebuilds. Unfortunately, you're gonna have to go to another website to watch those because the ones on here are the inferior originals except for the last one because it doesn't have one.

Watch order in case you're still confused

Neon Genesis Evangelion ep 1-26 1997

You can skip Death and Rebirth, its basically a recap of episodes 25 & 26 and the first 30 minutes or so of End of Evangelion

End of Evangelion will be the end of the original series

Evangelion 1.11, starts the rebuilds

Evangelion 2.22

Evangelion 3.33

Finally, Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0, is the last

DarkWraith Kevin • 1 year ago

So a friend of mine told me that the rebuilds on this site ARE the extended versions but are just mislabeled by admins, go figure. Needs verification

ronin • 10 months ago

Hell my confused fellow don't search NEON GENESIS EVANGELION and just search EVANGELION .

This is the order if you want to understand the whole series
Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Evangelion: Death(true)2.
The End of Evangelion.
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone.
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance.
Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo.
Evangelion:3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time

Dusskulll • 1 year ago

I love how there is zero reaon to watch episodes 1-22 -- only EoE and 23-26 matter lmao

NeganTheRealOneKT • 1 year ago

The anime got way to philosophical. It's great indeed that they've thematised a variety of topics but all jumbled together end up being a one big platitude. At some point it's even difficult to sit through all of it, though the anime per se was quite good

Someone you know • 1 year ago

Well... Great story, but I don't understand how the conclusion have something to do with the main story. I understand the conclusion don't get me wrong, but it leaves many questions to be answered like. What about the world from now on, what about the Gendo Ikari's hand?

The Half-Guinness Genie • 1 year ago

If you want to know what happened outside of Instrumentality, you can watch End of Evangelion. It's much more direct in that respect.

Me: is it worth watching
Also me: yes
Me: did you get all of it?
Also me: kinda

Long story short , I felt I understood myself from ep 25-26.
The world ain't a bad place after all. It depends on one's circumstances.
It's ok to be depressed af,but we have to get our sorry ass up and keep on moving while facing the world with GRIT.
THANK YOU EVANGELION.
now I'm gonna watch end of Evangelion.
Is it good?

Yes, but I advise against watching it if you're not in a good place at the moment.

Eikichi Onizuka • 2 years ago

That anime is the most depressing, mental breakdown I even saw
Time to watch slice of life
